NSW Country Club Championships 2008/09

Gold, Silver and Bronze at Country for Blueys

NSW Country Club Water Polo Championships were held in Albury on the Australia Day Long Weekend. Blue Mountains Water Polo entered 3 teams.

Ladies B - 3rd
Mens B - 1st
Ladies A - 2nd

The mens B Grade team had an exciting tournament, beginning with a game against Nordek on Saturday. The Blueys played a strong team game and won 10-4. Goals scored by Karl Kreiss 4, Greg Malone 3, Michael Hyslop 2, Wes Threlkeld and Pete Dennis.
Their 2nd game of the weekend was against the Pirates, again Blueys pulled off a strong win – 12-3. Goals scored by Greg Malone 3, Michael Hyslop 2, Karl Kreiss 2, Matt Heyhoe, Bob Lovatt, Wes Threlkeld and Pete Dennis. Their 3rd round game on Sunday was against Lavington and the boys were a little second hand for this one – they lost 6-3. Goals scored by Pete Dennis, Greg Malone and Karl Kreiss. These results saw the Blueys guys finish in 2nd place in their draw and they had a semi final against the 1st place from the other draw, Sharks. The game was played first thing Monday morning and the Blueys guys were firing. This was a brilliant game, which they controlled from the start. Goals scored by Ben Morgan 4, Greg Malone 3, Pete Dennis 2, Matt Berrell and Michael Hyslop. This put the Blueys into the Grand Final against Lavington (who they were beaten by the day before). The game started well, with Blueys taking an early lead, but they were pegged back in the last quarter and Lavington were back in the game, only trailing by 1. The boys held their cool and managed to steal a 7-6 win – grand final goals scored by Matt Berrell 2, Ben Morgan 2, Wes Threlkeld, Pete Dennis and Karl Kreiss. Congratulations Blueys. The Blueys boys were Danny Armour, Ben Morgan, Greg Malone, Wes Threlkeld, Karl Kreiss, Michael Hyslop, Matt Berrell, Pete Dennis, Matt Heyhoe, Chris Taylor and Bob Lovatt.
The Ladies A Grade team played 3 round games, their first resulting in an 8 goal win against Albury. Game number 2 on Saturday was a physical one, with plenty of tough match ups against Nordek, which the Blueys girls managed to also win. The Sunday game against Raymond Terrace was shaping up to be a tough one, but with a RT player excluded early in the match for disrespect and with no subs, the Blueys managed a 10-2 win. This left them in 1st place in their draw and they were up against the Pirates in the semi final on Monday. The semi was tough, with both teams playing hard, clean polo, Blueys managed to escape with a 2 goal win – which put them into the Grand Final against Raymond Terrace on Monday afternoon.
The Grand Final match started with Raymond scoring 2 quick goals off the Blueys poor defense and unfortunately, the Blueys just couldn’t catch up. It was a hard fought game and although the Blueys girls took plenty of poor shooting options, their defence was solid for the final three quarters. They lost the game 4-3. Another silver medal for the Blueys A Grade girls to add to their collection. The team was Nicole Birrell, Tracy Taylor, Cheryl Simpson, Leslie Storey, Kerrie Malone, Jill Doyle, Jen Coogan, Lorinda Gobbo, Courtney Finlay and Elissa Piper.
The B grade girls started their weekend with a huge win over Central Newcastle but followed that up with a loss to a tough Lavington. Their 3rd game of the weekend against Wagga saw the Blueys find form again and take another good win. They finished 2nd in their draw and played Lake Macquarie in the semi final who unfortunately they lost against by 1 goal. Lake Macquarie went on to win the competition and the Blueys girls played Albury in the final play off. They won the game and finished the competition in 3rd place. The team was Connie Gorham, Louise Moodie, Erin Moodie, Makayla Ballhause, Stacy Andrews, Michelle Graham, Beth Salmon, Jess Finlay, Melanie Marsden and Dani Heyhoe.
Blue Mountains Water Polo sent 30 players to this tournament – the biggest contingent to ever represent Blueys at a NSW tournament and the final results were fantastic for our club. Well done to all players for their gutsy and talented performances over the 3 day competition.

GO BLUEYS!

A special mention must also go to all players for their efforts in dressing up for the OP SHOP FUNCTION held on Saturday night. All Blueys team members participated and the club won “Best” (worst???) dressed team!

Blueys U20s face tough competition

Last weekend, Blue Mountains Water Polo entered a ladies team in the NSW Under 20s Championships held at Ryde pool. The standard of competition at this tournament is extremely high and the Blueys team used it as a learning experience as they played against some of the best junior players in NSW.

Games started on Saturday morning against a very fast Sydney Uni, who beat the Blueys 20 goals to 1. The Blueys defense picked up as the game went on, but Sydney Uni were just way to quick. Blueys goal scored by Erin Moodie.
The 2nd game of the weekend was against Drummoyne. Blue Mountains had a few good attacks in this game and got a few shots away, but were unfortunate not to put the ball in the back of the net more often. Connie Gorham was brilliant in goals this game, saving many powerful shots. Goals scored by Louise Moodie and Erin Moodie.
Game number 3 was another super quick one against Cronulla, who were also a lot bigger than our Blueys. Our girls were held, pulled and pushed around the pool, but kept their cool and managed to play well as a team. Though they still lost the game 15-1 – goals scored by Erin Moodie.
The last game of the day on Saturday against Balmain saw the Blueys girls play with a bare minimum of 7 players, so all the swimming and chasing up and back really wore them out. They went down to Balmain 14-1, goal scored by Bek Henderson.
Just one game to be played on Sunday, the play off for 8th and 9th position against Hunter. There was a lot of improvement in the girls extra man defense as well as their attack in this game. A strong contribution again from goalkeeper Connie Gorham stopped the score getting away from the Blueys girls. A 14-1 loss, Blueys goal scored by Lousie Moodie. A big thanks to Coach Matt Heyhoe and Manager Vickey Gorham for all their time and effort put in throughout the weekend. Congratulations to all the Blueys girls for finishing 9th in NSW and for putting in 100% effort and never giving up, no matter how tough it was.

CONGRATULATIONS BLUEYS GIRLS - AUSSIE MASTERS CHAMPS

Last weekend, some of the more “senior” Blueys Ladies traveled to the Gold Coast to compete in the Australian and Pan Pacific Masters Championships.

The competition was held at Pizzey Park Sporting Complex over 3 days and there were 10 water polo teams in total competing in a number of different categories. The Blueys girls cruised through the tournament undefeated, beating teams including Queensland, Guam and Parramatta. Team work was great throughout the tournament with all players contributing to some huge wins (including a 17-5 win over the Queensland Ladies on Saturday). Well done Blueys – MASTERS GOLD MEDALISTS!

Blueys team was: Cheryl Simpson, Leslie Storey, Robyn Ryan, Karla Carter, Sharon Vassallo, Nicole Ware, Tracy Taylor, Jill Doyle, Leanne Moss and Kerrie Malone
