U20 Ladies Report from the
NSW Club Championships 2007

Country District Championships were held at Parramatta Pool on the first weekend in March this year and for the first time ever, Blueys entered a Ladies Under 20’s team.

The Blueys girls started the weekend with a great game against Central Coast, who they beat 4-1, they then played Ovens and Murray and in a very close game they lost 8-7. The Saturday afternoon games were against Tamworth – which the Blueys won and Newcastle which they lost.

With 2 wins and 2 losses, the girls finished in 3rd place and played the semi final on Sunday morning against Ovens and Murray. The game was extremely close every quarter and at full time – it was a draw. This sent the game into extra time – 6 minutes, 1st goal wins. Unfortunately the Blueys gave up a 5m penalty which Ovens and Murray scored and the Blueys girls lost the game.

It was an absolutely fantastic effort from the whole team over the weekend and to finish in 3rd place in their first tournament as a team was a huge effort.

All the girls played great polo; Jenny Coogan was brilliant in goals (in the semi final she even saved 3 x 5m penalty shots), Kristy Stanton played beyond all expectation, Rachel Bourke was strong in Centre Forward and Aleasha Vreeken was great all weekend. The team was Jen Coogan, Rachel Bourke, Aleasha Vreeken, Lorinda Gobbo, Stephanie Camden, Makayla Ballhause, Sam Anderson, Mel Marsden, Kristy Stanton and Louise Moodie.

Congratulations to Rachel Bourke, Aleasha Vreeken, Mel Marsden and Kristy Stanton were selected in the NSW Country Under 20 Ladies Squad.

U14 Reports from the
NSW Club Championships 2007

The U14 girls had a very successful trip to Taree, finishing in 7th position and proving to themselves that they can hold their own against the top teams. The team was Connie Gorham, Jessica Carroll, Courtney Vreeken, Erin Moodie, Nicole Moodie, Stephanie Polivka, Annaleise Phoebe, Abbey Robards, Maddison Robards, Caitlin Berrell and Renay Vreeken. After a long but fun filled bus trip up, the girls arrived excited and ready for a great weekend. Their first match was against the 2nd best team in the comp, SNB A. Blueys played a tight controlled game and even though the final score was a  2 – 14 loss they should be proud of how they played against a very good side. The next game was always going to be tough. Up against Newcastle the girls knew they had to play hard and get a win if they were going to stay competitive. They played the best we had ever seen them play. Eddie had tears of joy as the pressure of the last 20 seconds of the game with the Blueys defence holding strong saw us win 3 – 2.
After a relaxing dinner at the local pub and some tension release time at the playground the kids headed back to the motel for some much needed sleep. The girls first match on Saturday wasn’t until 2.30pm. After an early breakfast with the boys team, the girls, with time and money on their hands decided to go shopping. After finding bargains on everything from bikini’s, jewellery, clothes to food the girls made their way to Taree pool to cheer on the boys. And boy were we loud!
Next stop for the girls, McDonalds for lunch, then back to the motel for a nap before the next game. Blueys played Drummoyne B next and once again the team fired.  With an 11 – 3 win the girls were pumped. Our last game on Saturday was against UNSW. The girls were starting to get tired by this game but they still put in a huge effort to win 10 – 5.
A team BBQ was just what everyone needed on Saturday night, then the girls were off to bed ready for their 8.30am quarter final match against the number one side Cronulla A.  Cronulla’s size and speed was just to powerful for the Blueys and somehow our littlest and youngest players always ended up marking the biggest, roughest opponent.  The girls didn’t stop trying and the final score of 1 – 15 loss was a great result.
Lunch time Sunday was our final game against another strong Cronulla side that outsized us again. This was a rough game for our bigger players and very physical for our little ones.
The team headed home on the bus about 1.30pm and even though the traffic on the freeway had stopped the girls laughter and talking continued on. Everyone on the bus had a great time, girls, manager, driver and parents. Congratulations girls on a mighty effort all weekend. Counting down to TAREE  2008

The Under 14’s boys team was: Hamish Burton, Sam Ruttley, Dylon Galea, Jeremy Thomas, Clancy Henderson, Jonathon Kennedy, Jake Cooper (all Blue Mountains), Joshua Chislett, Beau Carle, Alex Ihlow (from Manning Valley)

Game 1 - Blueys 4 vs Uni of NSW 9
Had a big swimming game and grateful for the Manning Valley boys in reserve. Our boys played well with Sam scoring 2 goals, Jake and Dylon 1 each.

Game 2 - Blueys 3 vs Central Coast 6
Boys played so much better in this game. The opposition were closer in ability to us and our team were getting to know each other better. Team work showed with more scoring opportunities coming in this game. Dylon, Pat and Alex (Manning Valley) each scoring a goal. Our defence was terrific and Hamish did a great job in goals. The cheersquad of Central Coast girls U/14 seemed to lift their boys to greater heights in the second half.

Game 3 - Blueys 5 vs Sydney Northern Beaches 6 What a great game. The score was close in the first half with Sam scoring 1 goal and Pat 2 (Jake actually pushed the ball inside the goal mouth). The game continued to be a little more SNB way until only a few minutes to go when Dylon and Pat scored and with only seconds to go the score was 5/5. Like a bad dream, on the final second, a powerful throw scored the deciding goal for SNB.

Game 4 - Blueys 2 v Sydney Uni 15
Defence still our strong point and now only 2 reserves on the bench made it tough against a faster swimming large team. Sam scored early in the match and everyone got a thrill out of that and played aggressively trying to get up in the scoring end of the pool. Dylon and Pat swam constantly trying to break away from the tight defence of the SU. Jeremy, Jon, Joshua and Jake were all passing the ball better each match and put in good efforts.

Game 5 - Blueys 1 v Cronulla Blue 17
This game was hard from the moment the teams hit the water. Cronulla had 13 players which they changed in 6 at a time most of the game. They had some extremely large strong players and they played a tough, feisty game with no let up throughout. Dylon scored a wonderful back shot and the supporters cheered loudly.

Game 6 - Blueys 2 v Alstonville 1 10
The coach set the boys tasks for the match - (secret men's business) and they played hard and tight to do their best. Sam and Pat were the goal scorers and also played well in defence. Dylon was keeping the defence organised and made breaks whenever an opportunity arose feeding the ball up the pool.

U16 Reports from the
NSW Club Championships 2007

The U/16 girls team travelled to Wollongong to compete in the NSW U/16 Club Championships over the weekend of 9, 10 and 11 of February. This is a very tough competition with the much bigger and stronger clubs like Cronulla, Balmain and St George entering 2 and 3 teams.  There were four groups divided into A, B, C and D. Our girls were in pool C and came up against Cronulla Blue, Newcastle and Sydney Northern Beaches. This group was undoubtly the strongest as in the end these three teams were placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th at the end of the competition.
Not to be deterred the girls faced Cronulla Blue on Friday afternoon. A buzz went around the crowd when the Blueys actually scored a goal early on to make the score 2-1. The girls held for a while but were overwhelmed and in the end went down to Cronulla 11-2. It should be noted that Newcastle and Sydney Northern Beaches only managed to score 1 goal each against Cronulla who were grand - final runners up! On Saturday the girls played Newcastle and also gave them a fright, but went down 8-4. Newcastle finished 3rd overall in the competition. In the afternoon the girls were up against Sydney Northern Beaches, a game that could have gone either way, unfortunately it went Sydney Northern Beaches way and they won 6-3 they also finished 4th overall.
On Sunday the girls played Balmain and came away with a win 4-1.  These girls should be congratulated for the guts and determination shown throughout the weekend and for toughing it out against the top teams. The girls were placed in the toughest pool and gave their best. Their team spirit and support of each other makes them a stronger team heading for the finals of the Sydney Comp.
The team consisted of: Beth Salmon, Aleasha Vreeken, Louise Moodie, Bek Henderson, Alaine Watson, Emily Gorham, Sam Thomas, Larissa Moore, Kristy Stanton, Ashley Weston.

The U16 Boy's Championships were held at Wollongong University pool over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of February. The standard of opposition was outstanding, and our boys should be proud of themselves in the way they competed and improved over the weekend, but they unfortunately didn’t come away with any wins, narrowly missing out in their last game losing 4 – 3.
Playing teams that regularly train and play together, that are quite experienced and well drilled was extremely daunting. To the boys credit they always fought hard and by the end of the tournament were defending extremely well. Most outstanding player for the Blueys throughout the tournament was Tim Simpson. He played exceptionally in defense, stopping many goals with his determination, and was also our highest goal scorer with 3 goals. Dylon Galea with 2 goals also played well and Sam Ballhause, when in goals, pulled off some miraculous saves. The most improved player over the tournament was Phillip Clear, who epitomized the Blueys spirit with his enthusiasm and dogged defending.
It was a great tournament and the boys should be proud with all their endeavors, (except for the whole sunscreen thing) and the way they represented the club was admirable.

Congratulations to Aleasha Vreeken who was selected in the NSW U/16 state squad to compete at the Australian Championships in September of this year

The Mens team played 3 round games, their first against a newly formed Bowral side. Blueys won the game 19-1, with all players bar one scoring at least 1 goal. Next they played Easts who have a number of experienced players on their team – again Blueys won 11-5. The Saturday morning game against Lavington was not as hard as the Blueys guys expected – Blueys won 8-5. This took our boys to the semi final against Wagga. Although the Wagga team have some new players, their main player has recently returned from an Australian Under 20 trip overseas. The Blueys guys shut him down brilliantly and won the semi 7-2. The Grand Final was against Wyong (who the guys find themselves up against regularly) & although they played a strong game, they lost 10-7. This silver medal is a first for any Blueys mens team in a NSW Water Polo Competition. All the guys played good water polo throughout the weekend and their team work was evident in each and every game. A special mention to Goalkeeper Danny, Ben & Ed for consistently brilliant performances!!

The Ladies B team was also brilliant all weekend. They followed Coach Tracy’s directions to a T, which saw them beat Central Newcastle B, Harden (who had 2 National League players in their side), Shoalhaven and Lake Macquarie B. The only game they lost in the rounds was against Manning Valley. This put the Blueys girls into the semi against Harden. In a tight game that could’ve gone either way, the Blueys girls put in 100% effort and won the game by 2 goals. They then played against a very strong and experienced Manning Valley in the Grand Final and lost 9-2 - though the score doesn’t show how good the game actually was. Our girls made the MV team work hard for almost every goal they scored and they never, ever gave up. Another silver for Blue Mountains. Each and every player in the B team stepped up another level throughout the weekend and it’s almost impossible to pick anyone who stood out – but a special mention must go to Elissa and Jen for showing us exactly what they are capable of in the pool.

The less said about the Ladies A team the better. The girls did not play to their potential and lost 3 games which they really should have won. Tracy, Aleasha and Lozzie played well over the weekend. They played Central Newcastle in the semi final and lost 10-2. This meant the Ladies A team finished 4th.

Overall a fantastic result for Blueys. Thanks to Trac, Chez and Ed for their fantastic coaching over the weekend. And thanks to the parents, husbands and kids who were there to cheer on all teams. GO BLUEYS! .......
