On the 17th, 18th and 19th of February, a Blueys Under 16’s girls team was entered in the NSW Under 16’s Championships held at Sutherland. The team consisted of Kristy Stanton, Aleasha Vreeken, Emily Gorham, Mel Marsden, Meaghan Creed, Sam Thomas, Jenny Allison, Alaine Watson, Amy Green, Kelly Millevoi and Bek Henderson. The girls played some tough teams across the 3 days including Alstonville, Sydney Northern Beaches, UTS-Ryde and Balmain. They played really well - especially Mel Marsden on the field and Jenny Allison played great in goals. A big thank you to Kathleen Watson who coached the girls throughout the weekend and did a really good job.

Report from the
NSW Country Club Championships 2006

Last weekend Blue Mountains Water Polo club entered 3 teams in the NSW Country Club Championships held in Newcastle and finished with excellent results. A Ladies A grade team and a Men’s B grade team were entered as well as a Ladies B grade team (for the first time ever). The Ladies A team consisted of: Nicole Birrell, Michelle Graham, Shannon Bourke, Mikala McConnell, Cheryl Simpson, Kerrie Malone, Jill Doyle, Lorraine Walsh, Brianna Davis and Barb Ballhause. Players on the Ladies B team were Kathleen Watson, Mel Marsden, Meaghan Creed, Julie Celeban, Lorinda Gobbo, Sam Anderson, Sara Korevaar, Courtaney Simpson, Sam Thomas and Jenny Dooley. Both ladies teams were coached by Tracy Galea. The Men’s players were Danny Armour, Chris Armour, Greg Malone, Ben Morgan, Shaun Hudson, Chris Taylor, Michael Malone, Stephen Winfield, Pete Dennis, Tim Hone and Matt Heyhoe.

Fantastic results were achieved by all teams. The men’s team played their first game against The Entrance and won 2-1, scoring the winning goal with 3 minutes to go. Goals scored by Michael Malone and Stephen Winfield. The next game was against Lake Macquarie B. The Blueys had a really strong attack in this game and blew Lake Mac out of the water. They won 8-2, goals scored by Ben Morgan 2, Stephen Winfield 2, Tim Hone, Michael Malone, Chris Armour and Shaun Hudson. A hard, fast, physical game was played against Tamworth (who finished 2 nd) and the Blueys boys were unfortunate to go down 6-5, with Tamworth scoring the winning goal with just 2 seconds remaining on the game clock, goals scored by Greg Malone 2, Michael Malone 2 and Ben Morgan. The semi final on Sunday morning was played against Central Newcastle B and the Blueys lost 4-2, both goals scored by Stephen Winfield. This meant that the Blueys Men’s team played off against Wagga for 5 th position in B grade (out of 11 teams). They won 12-0, goals scored by Michael Malone 3, Ben Morgan 4, Greg Malone 2, Tim Hone, Matt Heyhoe and Chris Armour.

The Ladies B team had some great performances over the 2 day tournament and did much better than anyone expected. There was a huge improvement in their efforts from the first game on Saturday to the last game on Sunday. The first game was against Cessnock and it was a hard fought, tight match. Blueys won 3-1, goals scored by Lorinda Gobbo, Sam Anderson and Jenny Dooley, a fantastic game by all, especially Jenny. Next they came up against a tough Wagga team and lost 13-4, goals scored by Lorinda Gobbo 2 and Courtaney Simpson 2. Lorinda was fantastic throughout this game with some great work in centre forward. The last game for Saturday was against Woy Woy (who were actually of A grade standard) and the Blueys gave them a good match, losing 11-2, goals scored by Julie Celeban and Mel Marsden. The Blueys B girls then beat Lake Macquarie B in another tough match 2-0, goals scored by Lorinda Gobbo and Sara Korevaar. They then played a semi final again against Lake Macquarie and their improvement was clear – they won this game 11-3, goals scored by Lorinda Gobbo 3, Sam Anderson 3, Mel Marsden 3 and Meaghan Creed 2. The win was a great team effort, but stand outs in this game were Sam Anderson who was everywhere in attack and defence and Mel Marsden who scored 3 great goals, including a push shot under pressure. Kathleen Watson played really well in goals all weekend and made some brilliant saves. The Blueys B ladies finished in 5 th place overall – a great effort.

The Blueys A team also did better than expected. The first game was against a fast Lake Macquarie team. Blueys were lucky to win 3-2, the winning goal scored by Cheryl Simpson with 2 seconds remaining. Chez had an awesome game and scored another goal, remaining goal scored by Michelle Graham. Next up was Central Newcastle, where the Blueys went down 4-2. The girls played a great defensive game, but lacked attack, goals scored by Cheryl Simpson and Kerrie Malone. They also lost their next game to Wyong 6-4. It was a tight match with Wyong always having the edge. Goals scored by Lorraine Walsh, Jill Doyle, Barb Ballhause and Cheryl Simpson. Tuggeranong proved to be tougher than expected and the Blueys lost 5-2, goals scored by Cheryl Simpson and Kerrie Malone. Shannon Bourke played extremely well during this game. The Blueys A girls ended up playing Wyong in the semi-final. They caught Wyong off guard by playing a different defence and attacking hard. Blueys won 3-1, goals scored by Jill Doyle, Kerrie Malone and Brianna Davis. Bri had a strong game in centre forward and Birrell made some awesome saves in goals.

The Blueys girls went into the Grand Final with confidence and kept Central Newcastle to a nil all score until halfway through the 2 nd quarter. It was an aggressive, rough game with Newcastle coming out on top 8-5. Blueys goals scored by Cheryl Simpson 4 and Barb Ballhause. The girls were stoked with their silver medal and with their team effort in the pool throughout the weekend.

Both girls’ teams wish to thank Coach Tracy Galea for her patience and guidance throughout the weekend. She gave us simple, clear instructions and direction in each and every match. Neither team would have performed so well without her expertise. Thanks Trace…….

This meant the girls finished in the top 8 teams in the comp and had to play Cronulla A in the semi final on Sunday. The Blueys/Parra girls lost 7-1 (goal scored by Cassie Armstrong), but the score did not reflect the actual game. The girls played well throughout and never gave up.

Also over the weekend the following girls were selected in the NSW Under 14’s girls State Squad: Aleasha Vreeken (Blueys) and Jessica Armstrong (Parra). Selections were also made for the Under 13s Girls NSW Development Squad: Courtney Vreeken (Blueys), Cassandra Armstrong (Parra) and Stephanie Polivka (Parra). Beth Salmon played really well in goals and was very unlucky not to be selected in NSW squad as a goalkeeper.
